The Foster Care Council understands that many students in the foster care system suffer from delays in their education due to the turmoil in their lives. A childās academic skills and behavior improve with a consistent tutoring program. The Foster Care Council has developed the Education Train private tutoring program to address the academic needs of foster children.
It is important that the barriers and challenges that face tutoring a foster child are recognized. These children need highly trained tutors that understand their emotional damage and severe academic delays. The Education Trainās dedicated staff works with the system so that tutoring services may continue even when the student moves from foster home to foster home. Tutoring may continue for up to six months after the child leaves the foster care system. Tutoring is conducted at the studentās home (only if the caregiver is present), the public or school library, or another public facility where adults are present.
Screening Procedures: 1. The referral will be completed by a caseworker or any other agency involved with the child.
2. The Education Coordinator will contact the parties involved.
3. The student will then be matched with a tutor.
4. Studentās progress will be measured by the Mini-Battery of Achievement test (MBA) with pre and post-testing and quarterly with tutor reports.
An authorized foster child representative must complete the Tutoring Referral Form to request tutoring. Please, fax the completed form to the FCC
